Jason Masi, a DC based singer-songwriter, got his start with his college band, Jubeus, playing a residency at The Lighthouse Cafe’ and opening for bands like Blind Melon, Everclear, SOJA, and Donna the Buffalo.
Masi started playing as a solo artist in 2010. He has an established east coast following and enjoys making his full-time living performing music. He performs solo and with his band in intimate settings, ticketed club shows, festivals, and private events which keeps him busy playing more than 250 events per year.
Masi cites influences that range from classic soul artists like Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers to folk and blues icons like Van Morrison and James Taylor as well as modern songwriters in the vein of Mat Kearney, Damien Rice, and James Morrison. His songs are often reflective and thought-provoking, yet maintain a free spirited and lighthearted tone.
He approaches his music in much the same way he does life. His laid-back and easygoing personality translates into the lyrics and tone of his music while his performances are energetic and portray him as the hardworking musician he is. It's a contrast that suits Masi well, as he goes from connecting with new fans like they are old pals and catching up with longtime fans before he takes the stage for a lively and passionate set.
Masi's celebrated his newest release, Capture the Heart, on November 30, 2018 at The Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, VA. The album explores various genres but maintains the honesty and focus that define Masi's sound. From the driving opening track "The Adventurer” which imagines a life full of exploration to the title track "Capture the Heart” that pays tribute to street musicians in New Orleans, each song has a fresh identity. This collection includes sweet love songs, such as the heartfelt "Love's Lips" that illustrates the feeling of being present for moments of love to the more sobering "Rest Be the Remedy" that tackles trying to maintain connection in a disconnected world. Songs like "Calm Me Down,” "Trouble,” and "Addicted" appeal to more edgy palates while the jazz inspired "You Make Me Feel So Nice" provides some levity and could accompany Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin on your fancy dinner playlist.
Multiple songs from the new record have recently been featured on the #1 hit daytime drama on CBS, The Young and the Restless.
"Masi manages to capture a sound that is old yet surprisingly fresh all at the same time. Trust me when I say there are legions of fans waiting for this guy to arrive..."
Seth Turner - Music Emissions
Expect great things from Masi as his cult fanbase gets established along the East Coast and beyond. I feel there’s a disgruntled audience out there just waiting for him to arrive with open arms."
Elliot Coleman - ALLWHATSROCK
“All songs are a skillful combination of modern pop rock yet with a slight alternative rock aftertaste that will remind you of Daniel Powter, Shayne Ward, James Blunt and James Morrison to John Mayer. Masi has the creativity and songwriting prowess to be extremely dangerous.
Devin Hester - Indie Music Reviews
Major USP is Masi's voice, which is one of those soulful ones that could make the back of a Cornflakes Packet sound sultry. He can emote with the best of them too…"
Jeremy Searle -Americana UK
"Combining a present voice, versatile guitar skills and a spectrum of emotion, Masi is emerging as a formidable emotional man's writer and musician. His songs resonate, and are as likely to move you as they are to get stuck in your head..." "Masi has a sound that favors many male pop artists in the late 70’s like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, The Band and Bread but with a modern-day feel. In this respect I can also hear... Griffin House, Eric Hutchinson, Barefoot Truth and Animal Liberation Orchestra."
Micah Barry - Indie Shark
“Most would agree most popular artists out there have something truly special to give to their fans. This goes above the typical attributes like raw talent, amazing songs, nice voice, or even a very marketable look, sound & image. There’s something truly infectious at the core of these artists that simply makes us feel good when we listen to them. Whatever “it” is – they all seem to have “it”. ... "most famous artists out there have “it” I’m not so sure what “it” is but Jason Masi has whatever “it” may be."..."Let me go on record and say Jason Masi is a SONY record deal waiting to happen. I also wouldn’t be surprised to hear his music on Prime Time Radio someday or even featured in a Major Motion Picture or TV production in the near future."
RJ Frometa - Vents Magazine
"Right from the start it might be easy to just categorize Masi as some straight ahead young and run of the mill folk rocker, and write him off as the newest trending thing around the East Coast. It wouldn’t be wise, though."...some bands and artists can deliver music that’s pretty straight forward, conservative and painfully simple yet brilliant in scope. Bottom line: they make it look so easy. Furthermore in lieu of the amazing string of songs Masi has delivered, it almost feels as if he’s on to something, well special.
